"A rose is a rose is a rose" said Gertrude Stein, a friend of Picasso's in his parisian years. Language plays with us and we try building shapes with it. There are numerous types of roses, starting with "Why not sneeze, Rrose Sélavy?" the renowned 'ready made' sculpture by Marcel Duchamp to the roses in the fabulous El Rosedal Garden in Palermo, Buenos Aires.

What is the function played by language in art pieces?

Since egiptian antiquity or maya codices, elements have been employed to represent what we now call 'word'; later on, the written word appears in works of art , whether it be as means to denote certain origin or to make sense of a particular content, as it is the case with 'Las monjas coronadas' exhibited as "La Muerte Barroca" in Banco de la República. The contemplation of tension between materiality and concept, and even so the materiality and language itself (or the dematerialization of the work of art, when this one is composed solely of written language, like in Yoko Ono's list of instructions), have motivated us to review the way in which a group of contemporary artists incorporate text in their work.

"Contexto" aims to highlight the linguistic and/or conceptual turn in contemporary production.

Ana Maria Velásquez
ANA MARÍA
VELÁSQUEZ
In a game between fragility and strength, Ana María Velásquez's installations and sculptures are built from the meticulous collection and classification of everyday industrial waste: milk bags, plastic elements, industrial packaging and simple hardware elements such as guides and cables: nuts and bolts. She uses current invoice paper, residue from the accounting of everyday consumption, as an element to build dim mobiles. These various pieces are rearranged and assembled to simulate ghostly urban landscapes of the Big Apple, or to recreate flocks of vultures, astonishing creatures that inha...

ANDRÉS
ORJUELA
Orjuela's work proposes a reinterpretation of certain social, political and historical events, whose analysis over time allows for multiple interpretations, even contradictory ones. Behind an image of King Kong a political criticism can be hidden. His visual repertoire is filled with elements of popular and mass culture: magazines, comics, press photo archives, toys, masks, family photo albums, rescued from street sales, among others. All these symbolic elements make up a rich and personal collection of images that the artist classifies, saves and consults in building associations for his w...

JORGE
BARCO
“The effort to give a certain materiality to something apparently ethereal like sound is a constant in my artistic work” In his projects, he investigates, from a sound perspective, issues related to media archaeology, speculative design, spatial imaginaries, and geological materials. Within his production strategies, he combines media such as analog electronics and the reappropriation of low-tech technologies, to create sound machines and installations, which he combines with performance and on-site projects. Barco has held exhibitions, residencies, and workshops in different art centers, m...

RAMON
LASERNA
Ramón Laserna (1977, Colombia) studied Industrial Design at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2016 he participated as a resident in Flora ars + natura, directed by José Ignacio Roca. His graphic exploration is very close to abstract movements and Latin American kinetic art. With his methodical line drawings he achieves a body of work of great diversity. Through small changes in the angle of planes, he produces visual phenomena of vibration, movement, or moiré within a refined formal style. His experimentation revolves around the ideas of line, color and light, with these ...

JULIÁN
BURGOS
Julián Burgos's painting is consistent with his European training, particularly marked by his studies and life in France. The wonders of classical baroque painting inspired in him a desire to appropriate the techniques of the masters and to meddle with the formal language of great landscapes, mythical representations and the representation of the body. His immersion in baroque art is also characterized by the freedom to make iconoclastic use of diverse languages, analogous to Latin American baroque architecture, in which formal religious stylistic motifs were associated with tropical fauna ...
Jorge Ortiz Cancino
JORGE
ORTIZ

The work of Martha Lucía Ramírez is characterized by her empathy with human emotions; from her feminine condition, she attaches fundamental importance to the expression of feelings, as well as to the great intertwining of solidarity. Her work considers contemporary experiences of mass migration, forced displacement, and solidarity networks, giving these recurring situations an epic dimension. Human chains, groups crossing rivers, carrying their belongings on their backs are associated with geographic drifts, in which entire continents are in motion. Mass communication sources feed her visua...

AZUL Y LINDY
MÁRQUEZ
We are sisters and together we have built an artistic process that began in life, in childhood; to remember, forget and create memory, which is visible through the body, gesture, and image. This is how projects presented in individual exhibitions in Medellín have emerged, such as: Autobiografía del Universo, Sala U (2019); Universe, Timebag, The Blue House (2015); Cubo X2, Casa Tres Patios (2014) and Reflected, Cultural Center, Faculty of Arts (2011). In addition, participating in group exhibitions since 2004, in which we highlight the most recent ones: 2020 Sessions in Confinement, MAMM; W...
