MARTA ELENA
VÉLEZ
MEV - La playa de los muertos de Barú
La playa de los muertos de Barú. Acrylic and oil on canvas. 126 x 156 cm. 1986
Medellin, Colombia. 1939

The artist, a member of the ‘Once de Medellín’, is an emblematic figure of the art scene in Antioquia. She participated in the cultural events that transformed the city in the sixties and seventies, at a time when Débora Arango was retired and Dora Ramírez represented an earlier generation. Close to the group gathered around Alberto Sierra, she maintained a particularly feminine approach. Elaborating its own emotional narrative, she is characterized by her imaginary repertoire (Rousseau, the baroque, industrial textile production, Greco-Roman antiquity, the tiger as a sign). In the proposed works, her vision of a dreamlike, magical and personal world is manifested. She avoids the literal reading of her work, where irony and humor make their entrance with certain reservation that keeps open its possible interpretations.
